Ligon GT/AIG Basics Magnet Middle School is located in Southeast Raleigh between East Lenoir Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. In September 1953, Ligon Junior-Senior High opened as the City of Raleigh High School for African Americans. The cost of the original building was $1 Million and at the time was the largest school construction project in the state. In 1998, a $3 Million construction project began to build a state of the art Arts Wing and Gymnasium.
It has been over 20 years since Ligon has had any major updates or renovations. The building shows signs of wear and tear. One of the main issues is the ceiling/roof in the gymnasium. When it rains, there are always leaks. Our custodian takes great pride in the building and keeps it clean and presentable.
One area that could be improved with little resources is the front entrance. Many of the plans are dead and weeds are overgrown. A community involved "Beautification Day" could spruce up the front entrance with little cost to the school.
