One thing Ms. Dula was passionate about this year was marketing Sanderson High School to our community. We are one of the smallest high schools in Wake County and we have so much to offer students. We have three high schools in close proximity that are magnet schools attracting students from our base population. As a former magnet coordinator, I was able to help design structures and processes to engage our parents and community. We put together school tours to engage prospective students, community members, and anyone interested in learning more about our school. Our tours included information from administration, teachers, parents, and our precious students! |
My September NCSU writing assignment was to create a fundraising flyer that would engage our parents and community in our fundraising effort. It is important for school leaders to work collaboratively with the PTO to engage the greater school community. As principal resident, I captured photographs and video footage of our students interacting with technology. I collaborated with our Adobe Visual Design students to put together a video that the PTO could share with our school community and corporate sponsors to encourage donations for additional technology that would directly benefit all students. |

During my first year of graduate school, I organized and hosted the May Fuquay Varina Rotary Club meeting at Lincoln Heights Magnet Elementary School. The rotary club is made up of community members and local business owners that want to support our school. There were many misconceptions about our school and students and we wanted to share our story. Many community members thought all our students were poor and didn't have basic school supplies. This meeting was an opportunity to show community members our school, the great things that happen on a daily basis, our newly renovated building, and the materials (i.e. technology) that our students could use! As a result of this tour, we had new community members sign up to read with our students, donate technology, and share information about our school to others in Fuquay Varina. This meeting was an opportunity to put in to practice an important message I learned in graduate school...Tell your story or others will! |
6b. Federal, State and District Mandates: The principal designs protocols and processes in order to comply with federal, state and district mandates.
In August of 2019, I attended the WCPSS Student Due Process training. This training provided an overview of legal mandates regarding student discipline. As a school leader, I must ensure that I am knowledgeable of federal, state, and district mandates. I also need to make sure that my staff understand the mandates and create structures that keep us all in compliance. Through this process, I learned the importance of completing full investigations with disciplinary matters and always referring to the "2019-2020 Policies and Procedures" manual. Referring to the manual allows me to focus on policy versus my thoughts/feelings. |

In August 2019, I attended the Wake County SRO Summit. This was an opportunity for all School Resource Officers and administrators to come together and hear the same information regarding the Memorandum of Understanding and legal mandates. As a school leader, I must ensure that I am knowledgeable of federal, state, and district mandates. I also need to make sure that my staff understand the mandates and create structures that keep us all in compliance. Through this summit, I learned when to involve the SRO and when to handle situations at a school level. Through my positive relationship with Officer Santana, I was able to have honest conversations with him about when I needed him to not intervene so that we did not make a situation worse for a student by introducing legal issues. I made sure to advocate for all of my students and help others to keep in mind that their brains are still developing! |
In November 2019, I attended the WCPSS LEA training. This training provided an overview of how to effectively LEA an IEP meeting and shared information about the laws and requirements that must be followed. As a school leader, I must ensure that I am knowledgeable of federal, state, and district mandates. I also need to make sure that my staff understand the mandates and create structures that keep us all in compliance. Special education is an area where many mistakes are made and it is important to follow all protocols so students receive their services and the school is not liable for compensatory services. |

During my time as principal resident at Ligon Magnet Middle School, I was tasked with organizing the beginning of year trainings and collecting the signed forms. I created a google doc that included all of the links to the different trainings as well as the necessary forms. This made it easy for staff members to find all the training links and forms in one document. Staff members are legally required to complete these trainings each year and the forms must be kept on file at the school. My organizational skills helped me to facilitate this task with ease. |
As part of ELP 518: School Law for Administrators, I read and analyzed many court cases related to school law. It is imperative that school leaders keep up with current federal, state, and local educational laws. There are supreme court rulings that influence how today's administrators deal with issues such as student speech and student searches. |
