School Curriculum
Ligon GT/AIG Basics Magnet Middle School operates more like a high school than a traditional middle school. Students take classes for eight periods a day (4 core classes, 3 electives, and a homeroom) that are 45 minutes each. Grade levels are not divided up in teams. Ligon has two magnet themes that operate in tandem: Gifted and Talented program and Academically or Intellectually Gifted Basics (AIG) program. Every student is considered a gifted and talented student. With over 100 electives offered, students are able to discover their gifts and talents in a wide variety of areas. Ligon is very well-known for its art program, which includes band, chorus, dance, visual arts, and theater. We offer five foreign languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish). Students in the AIG Basics program are grouped with other AIG-identified students for Language Arts and Social Studies and/or Math and Science instruction, according to their individual qualifications. Many students earn high school credit by taking higher-level math, language arts, and/or foreign language classes.
